FLICKR-Roll-36-Frame-20.jpg UntitledThumbnailsThe Pier Also Rises
A photo of an archway (part of the Green Gate in Gdańsk, Poland). The sides of the photo show richly ornamented architectural details, including a lion’s head sculpture and a sculpted mosaic. Two dark bins flank the archway. Through the arch, two people walk a small dog on cobblestones, with sunlit tenements in the far background.

I was testing Fomapan 200, and my Minolta X-500 (which had nearly dead batteries, so the light meter didn't work most of the time) in Gdańsk city centre, when I noticed two gentlemen with a small dog walking past me. I didn't think much of it as I was preparing to take a shot of the Green Gate's archway. But then, they went through the gate and passed in front of the archway I already had framed. My original idea was to take a photo with no people in it, but that would have been so much less interesting! The two gentlemen become the main subject, and the architectural detail act as support and a frame. I was lucky to have pressed the shutter button in the exact instant that I did: the subjects' legs are all visible and evenly spaced, and the two gentlemen are exactly in the centre of the archway. I find this composition exceptionally pleasing.
