I used a vinyl backdrop, one of the brightest I had at the time, and I curved so it would serve as the background too. The coffee was just a random unground coffee I'd bought or perhaps got as part of a gift bag. I didn't think much of it, but after the photo was already developed, I realised that the striped paper bag that was very close in tone to the background, turned out to be a great tool to boost the visibility of the coffee beans. It's there, it provides a natural-looking context, but it's almost invisible, making the coffee the obvious star of the shot. The placement of the beans on the table is not random; I placed each bean that's not part of the main pile manually.

Very little was done to the image in post; there's basically just a little selective dodging and burning to concentrate the viewer's eyes on the coffee.
